Random little post

So in the post that I wrote yesterday I talked a bit about sacrifice and I just wanted to write this down before I forget. I just finished watching Journey's End, the season 4 finale, and oh my god. I'm generally really terrible at spectating what's to come (thanks to years of being mind screwed by Lost) but I was so spot on with the people sacrifice themselves in the Doctor's name being such a huge part of his remorse and the burden that is on his shoulders all the time. Ah! But I wanted that down so I could remember when I write my full review. Also, I totally called the hand. :)

8//Father's Day

This episode made me so emotional. And I'm going to tell you I am not one to get choked up while watching or reading something. However, I just kept thinking about if I were put into that situation how would I feel and how would I be able to have this conversation with my dad or mom knowing that they were supposed to be dead. Even though the plot wasn't that heavy there was just so much emotion that it really ended up being one of my favorites so far.

Like pretty much every other episode, my favorite parts are the human-human (or Time lord) interactions. I continue to find that the great thing about Doctor Who is that it is so reflective of life now and that's because of how brilliantly the writers capture the relationships. I particularly liked Pete and Jackie's relationship when you juxtapose it with the flash back in the beginning of the episode. Jackie always told Rose how great her father was and how much she loved him, giving Rose this idea that their relationship was perfect. But the truth of the matter was that it was flawed and that is why it was beautiful. Their relationship was so human and I really liked seeing that.

I also enjoyed watching Pete and Rose's relationship develop and in the end when she was sitting with him while he died, I was near tears. Even though I knew they couldn't stay together and develop their father-daughter relationship, I wanted to see how they interacted more with each other.

Also, the theme of sacrifice is so prevalent in Doctor Who, it has been seen in a lot of the episodes so far and I think what's great about it, while still being tragic, is that a lot of the times the are normal. It isn't the Doctor sacrifices himself every time and that is why it's so great. Because if it were the Doctor, it would cheapen the thought of it every time it was done. It also shows how normal people can be brilliant and can help save the day.

7//The Long Game

This is one of those episodes that it's completely possible to happen. The corruption of the media is already so prevalent in our society that I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up having something similar happen. Probably without the aliens but you never know.

There was a lot about this episode that I really liked mostly because I thought that a lot of it is very possible. I forgot to mention Adam in my last post so I'll talk about him here. At the beginning of Dalek I kind of liked him but as we got to know him he got a bit annoying. For someone who worked in the lab where he saw bits of aliens and even a live alien however he seemed so reluctant in this episode. And then he went and got the port in his head and I lost all respect for him. I can only imagine what his mother thought at the end of the episode when it opened.

While the post of this was a little wonky, I'm continuing to love this show. Even though it's sci-fi I feel like there is a realness to it that very few shows of any genre can get that affect. And to me, one of the best parts about it is the relationship between the characters. Remember how I didn't want to Doctor and Rose to stop being platonic. Yeah, that's totally shot to hell. I love their relationship so much. I think in part it's because of Christopher Eccleston and the way he portrays the Doctor and how he interacts with Rose.

6//Dalek

Blah, blah, blah, I suck at updating this. But I'm determined and stubborn so I will continue. Like I mentioned in my last post, I like how DW goes back to old topics (the Slitheen hand in the museum) while also foreshadowing certain topics *wink* the robot head. I like that I can make the connections to the previous episodes, am I being a Whovian?

When I saw the title of this episode, I was pumped to say the least. Because I have a Tumblr I have very minimal exposer to the show and one thing I did know was that the Daleks were serious business (I got the same feeling when I started watching Blink.) And I'm gonna be honest here, the Daleks are freaking scary. I think the scariest monsters/aliens/paranormal things on this show are the ones no leeway, meaning there seems to be no way to stop them. The Daleks are creatures who truly believe they are superior and will stop at nothing to get rid of, or exterminate, everything else. That's what makes the Daleks such great characters and what makes me fascinated by them.

The other part of this episode that I really like is Rose's human-ness. Sure, she didn't know how awful the Daleks were, but she saw a sad creature and felt for it. I've noticed that becomes common with all of the companions (at least the ones I've met so far) and I suppose this is the because it is just so inherent to human behavior. We have the Doctor who seems like he can do anything and then we have Rose who depends on the Doctor and then she is able to do something that ultimately helps and ruins the Dalek.

Overall I really liked this episode, while it didn't go into the relationship between the Doctor and another person /ally, I thought the relationship between the Dalek and The Doctor, being such enemies was so interesting.

5//World War Three

I'm just not having a good week, so I apologize I said I'd write this yesterday but it's up! Sorry. I don't have much to talk about in this post because this episode was important but it wasn't a favorite of mine. There are three topics I want to mention.

First, I really like how topics in early episodes come up in later ones. I don't want to give much away if you're watching along with me. But just little topics from this episode and some other things come up later and it makes it nice for people who watch from the beginning to feel kind of special. I hope this continues.

Secondly, I went to talk about the Doctor's relationship with Jackie. While I understand why she gets so ticked at him for taking Rose away, I hate that she only starts to like him once he's saved her life. Doesn't matter that he's saved Rose's life, it's not until it's her that she changes her mind. Also, I love that she asks all the stuff about what he eats, I suppose she'd have no way of knowing but I just found it amusing.

Lastly, freaking Mickey man. I honestly don't know if I'm going to get through a post without mentioning him. I'm sorry but he's just so annoying. He's a cry baby, sure he helps save the world but he has to whine about it and then turn the Doctor down, who would do that? Lame. Anyway Mickey...ugh.

Ok sorry again for the short post. The next one will be much longer cause I really liked the episode so I'll make up for it.

4//Aliens of London

So I'm here again! Sorry it is taking longer than I expected to get used to school and while I've finished the entire first season of DW (so many emotions!) I just haven't gotten around to writing about them. I'm going to try and get on done every day this week so I'm all caught up so I don't feel guilty watching more episodes knowing I haven't written about them. OK! So this episode was weird. I was watching it with a friend and numerous time through out we both said "ughhh so weird! What?! So weird!" I'll get to that later but my first statement is just that; so weird.

I was really disappointed when Mickey came back. I just don't like him, it almost seemed like he didn't care that Rose was back but he was angry that he was called in for questioning about her disappearance. Well if he wasn't such a prat maybe people wouldn't think you murdered your girlfriend. I think the relationship between The Doctor and Jackie is really funny, she's such an over bearing character and I find his remarks to everything she says to be quite funny. I also enjoyed how everyone assumed that the Doctor was some kind of pervert who kidnapped Rose. I just don't look and the Doctor and think 'pervert' but I guess that's the point.

The first weird moment of this episode was when they revealed what was in the ship. Ugh that pig was so disgusting and weird, for lack of a better term. My friend and I both were distressed by the pig thing. Just gross. I thought this episode was a bit confusing because there were so many new people coming and going, and they all looked very similar because of the ideal suit the Slitheen needed. I definitely didn't trust Harriet Jones at first (it's becoming difficult to write about this without adding things that later come up in the series) but I came to like her later in the episode. I always wonder if I were in similar situations would I just go along with whatever craziness the person (in this case the Doctor) was spewing or would I think they were insane. It's hard to know unless I'm ever put in that situation.

Like I said earlier, this episode was weird and I didn't like it very much. Until tomorrow when I discuss my feelings on the second half of this episode.

3//The Unquiet Dead

Sorry for the hiatus, I recently moved into college and I've been busy packing and the like. I'm not sure what the frequency of these blogs are going to be, I think once class starts I'll have more time, but since this weekend I'm being forced to go to things about school pride and alcohol use, not sure I'll be posting again this weekend. Luckily, before I left I wanted a few episodes with my friend and I can talk about those. I left off with the Unquiet Dead.

I'm defiantly getting better at watching these and not cringing at the effects. The ghost people were slightly creepy, mostly the old lady rather than the other ones. I was slightly confused as to why the Doctor was so against being in Cardiff, can any Brits explain that to me? (Is this like the everyone hates Welsh people thing, I just don't understand.) My friend and I were very worried about Rose being Chloroformed by the creepy mortician. His assistant, Gwyneth, was a nice girl, her part was acted very well and even though she didn't have a huge part, her death was sad. One thing that bothered me was the conversation between her and Rose. I feel like a woman from 1869 would be much more appalled my Rose's observations of men's butts. Again, this is a TV show, I can't let my history nerd-ness get in the way.

I also want to mention the bond between the Doctor and Rose. I really enjoy their friendship. I know that Rose is the more "romantic" of the companions, but I like that they can have a platonic friendship. I'm a big believer in male/female friendships and I love seeing them portrayed in shows. If this changes, I'll be a little disappointed.

I really liked sassy Charles Dickens. I had my own personal dislike for the character, for the sole reason that I dislike Charles Dickens' writing. However, his sarcasm was wonderful. I can't help but think that the real Dickens would have been similar to the one in this episode. You'd have to be pretty angry to write such depressing books.

I'm off to bed to now. I'll try to post my review for the next episode, but I suppose I should socialize at college.

2//End of the World

So first off I really liked this episode. It's probably my obsession with dystopian novels and culture that made me enjoy it so much. One of my favorite parts was how when Lady Cassandra came with classic items from earth like a jute box, which she called an Ipod, and played "classic" music. I find that interesting because when you think about what we learn in history classes, we have no idea whether any of that is true because naturally humans exaggerate and forget things. So for all we know something that happened in the middle ages could be completely fabricated by human error. I also liked seeing the other alien races and I agree with Rose they did look very, alien. One thing that bothered me was how Jade looked very humanoid while the other trees looked...well like trees. Was it because she was a girl? I don't know but I was sad when she died cause I did like her. She almost reminded me of the Ents from LotR.

It wasn't a surprise that the Adherents of the Repeated Meme were in on the scheme to kill everyone. They just looked kind of evil with the dark cloaks and the raspy voices. I was slightly surprised by Cassandra being a part of the plan but when it came down to it, she acted odd the entire episode being over dramatic about everything. I always think when you try to make yourself look not guilty you end up looking worse.

The relationship between Rose and the Doctor starting to form some more and I did like how they got frustrated at each other. Because of the situation in makes sense that Rose would get a little bothered by the whole situation, it would be overwhelming. I'm also really interested to hear more about the war that destroyed the Doctors world. I hope that is explained more in the future. Overall I think they was a good second episode and it defiantly made me want to continue watching and writing this posts.

1//Rose

Since this is the very first episode I almost feel like there isn't much to talk about plot wise. So I'm gonna jump in and just discuss the characters. First off Rose. So far I don't have much of an opinion on her. Whenever I watch shows where weird things happen, like manikins coming to life, I think How can that person really think this is happening? Then I have to back up and remember that this is a science fiction show and that is how it works. That's what I was thinking about Rose at the beginning of the show. However that's a stupid thing to think and I hope once I watch more episodes I'll get more of an opinion on her.

Now let's get to the fun stuff, the Doctor. On Tumblr I always sees posts about 10 and 11 but I rarely see anything about 9. So for some off reason I had this assumption that 9 was a more serious doctor. I think Christopher Eccleston, who portrays 9, has a more formal look about him so maybe that's why I had this notion. However, I was very wrong. Everything from his very bouncy walk to his almost carefree attitude makes me really like watching him. His delivery is quick and the banter between him and Rose is very good. Overall, I really like him so far.

The other two bigger characters in this episode are Rose's mother, Jackie, and her boyfriend, Mickey. Neither are very likable, the mother being obnoxious and the boyfriend was just plain annoying (possibly the character itself or possibly the actor, I wasn't a fan of his acting skills.) Hopefully her mother will get less annoying and the boyfriend won't show up again.

At the end of the episode when she turned the doctor down, for some reason I actually believed that she wasn't going to go with him (at least at this time.) I liked how Rose almost called out her boyfriend for being useless (I really don't like him) and went with the Doctor. I like their pairing a lot and can't wait to watch more of them.

An Introduction

I spend a lot of my time on the Internet. And when I'm not on the Internet I'm most likely reading or watching TV. I have gotten most of my television recommendations from different blogs or vlogs and some of them have turned out to be some of my favorite shows (hello Battlestar Galactic, way to be awesome.) Clearly, I'm a bit of a nerd. However there was one show that I hadn't seen. One show that everybody raved over that, for one reason or another, I never got around to watching. You can probably tell what that show is by the title of this blog, Doctor Who. I had never even heard of the show until I started watching vlogs on YouTube last year. At first I wasn't interested, however when the new season was on and my Tumblr dash exploded with Doctor Who post, I became intrigued. What was it about this show that everyone loved so much. So I watch the first episode and enjoyed it. Since I wanted to make sure that it wasn't a fluke, I watched the second. And liked it even more.

As I was thinking about this fandom (Nerdfighteria) I realized that most people in it are huge Who fans,or Whovians, as I think they are called. I'm a rarity, I had never seen a single episode. I wanted to share this experience with those who have and have not watched this series. Thus Meeting the Doctor was born. In this blog I'll be talking about my opinions on each episode from the very beginning. I have no rules to when I will watch and how long this will take, but I wanted to do it. I will be discussing each episode in detail so if you haven't watched the most recent episode I suggest waiting until you are finished because I will be talking about plot spoilers. On that note, I just have one rule, NO SPOILERS for episodes I'm not on yet. When you were first experiencing the series, you weren't spoiled. So I kindly ask that you don't spoil me in the comments. Thanks in advance.
